The neurosurgeons at the practice, a Suffolk fixture for 20 years, will lend their services to South Shore University Hospital
NeuroCare Long Island, a group of four neurosurgeons with offices throughout Suffolk County has joined Northwell Health. The board-certified, fellowship trained neurosurgeons have practiced on Long Island and throughout the New York Metropolitan area for over 20 years and will now perform surgeries at South Shore University Hospital (SSUH).
Leading the group of neurosurgeons are Kevin Mullins, MD, who has been named Chair of Neurosurgery at SSUH, and Salvatore Zavarella, DO, the Vice Chair of Neurosurgery at SSUH. They are joined by Joshua Ryan, MD, and Salvatore Insinga, DO.
“The physicians and staff at NeuroCare Long Island are excited to join Northwell Health, and to continue our mission of bringing the highest level of compassionate care to our patients in the communities we serve,” said Dr. Mullins. “Northwell’s clinical and administrative resources, along with NeuroCare’s “patients first” focus will ensure that patients in our Long Island communities who are faced with disorders of the spine or brain will have access to world-class treatment, close to home.”
The doctors treat conditions including brain tumors, aneurysms, strokes, back and neck pain and more. Their offices are in Huntington, Holbrook and West Islip.
“My priority as a neurosurgeon is to be able to offer my patients the most advanced treatment options resulting in high quality outcomes and shorter recovery times,” said Dr. Zavarella. “These are exciting times in terms of surgical advances, and joining Northwell Health will allow my partners and I to continue to offer patients a tailored, individualized treatment plan, leveraging those advances, across the continuum of care. I’m proud to work with Northwell Health leadership on the expansion of high-quality neurosurgical services across Long Island.”
“Northwell Neurosurgery is constantly striving to strengthen our team and improve care to all patients dealing with problems of the brain and spine, said Daniel Sciubba, MD, SVP, neurosurgery, Northwell Health. With the partnership of NeuroCare Long Island, we have now expanded our expertise to increase options for all such patients throughout Long Island.”
In 2022, SSUH completed its state-of-the-art Linda and John Bohlsen Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a 6,300-square-foot space dedicated to treating the most critically ill neurology patients. The ICU offers 24/7 treatment of neurosurgical and critically ill neurology patients and is staffed by neuro intensive care attending physicians and advanced care providers who are specially trained to support neuroscience patients.
“NeuroCare Long Island, becoming part of Northwell Health is another example of the exciting expansion that continues in our eastern region,” said Joseph Baglio, SVP, ambulatory operations officer, Northwell Health eastern region. “This prestigious group of neurosurgeons will be practicing in multiple locations throughout eastern Long Island, providing the highest level of health care for our patients.”
The Bohlsen Neurosciences ICU has the capacity to treat up to eight patients at a time and allows for the swift recovery from complex neuro-cranial procedures, acute treatment of stroke and other endovascular procedures. The spacious rooms are geared toward healing and feature holistic natural light, large areas for family to be with loved ones, private bathrooms and special overhead lighting to allow doctors to perform minor procedures in the room.
“We have established a cutting-edge neuroscience ICU, performing intricate brain surgeries and enhancing stroke patient outcomes through swift, endovascular interventions,” said Irene Macyk, PhD, RN, executive director, SSUH. “South Shore’s transformation to a tertiary medical center is fueled by the growth of essential clinical initiatives, alongside the invaluable contributions of benevolent philanthropists like Linda and John Bohlsen.”
